Of course today was the day for waterproofs… a miserable filthy day where if you’re not careful you fund yourself thinking “nothing but mist and fog and cloud and wind and rain … could just take a selfie here, who would know??” Ah, that cursed Strava. Here’s a pic of what was in store for
It’s a logic that works for me; there’s no way you’re not going to finish the last day even if you have to crawl so therefore the penultimate day is effectively the last. That way you get Double Euphoria right? Reasonable start to the day and this turned out to be Objective 1 I know
…be at your back and may the ground rise to meet your feet”. Today’s briefing was pretty straightforward: 1) pick correct direction; 2) head for and over Windy Gap; 3) reach Glenbeigh and stop. (* SPOILER ALERT* did all three). Heavy overnight night rain meant the early ‘walk alongside river’ was effectively ‘walk along riverbed’
Probably the best day so far. Started well, good hotel in Muckross (it was made clear to me that the emph-ASIS was on the second syll-ABLE) and they allowed me to have a sneaky early brekkie which then seemed to cause havoc with various (other) foreigners who had their noses pressed against the frosted pane
The only way to get from the end of the Blackwater Way (today) to the start of the Kerry Way (tomorrow) is the road non-option… what can you do? To keep you abreast of local lumps and bumps these are for some reason called The Paps One one of the better starts to a day….

In the middle of singing Happy Birthday (for I had inadvertently intruded upon husband-of-Sheila-Meine-Hostesses special day and meal) there was a power cut. No worries, candles were produced. Upon asking if there was a typical outage period I was told
Thought I could change it up and include a cinematic reference. Possibly your ears only pricked up that morning re. Hurricane Hannah when its arrival on UK shores was forecast for tomorrow, maybe missing the bit about “southwestern Ireland will bear the brunt of it today”. I can assure that it’s indeed here and building
It might be a quirk of circumstance or previous restaurateurs might have called ahead but in both of Fermoy’s Indian last night and the Chinese the night before when I asked for a beer they said I couldn’t have one. Their excuse was that they didn’t sell any to anyone …. which made the Kingfisher
Today’s a rest day. Rest from hard roads and hard trails. Padding around a Very Nice BnB in socks, getting laundry done, reading a newspaper … sweet little luxuries. And as you do various thoughts come to mind inspired by 12 days and 240 miles … Guinness appears to be an anti-diuretic, who knew? When
